Both systems send power to all four wheels, but they work differently and suit different needs.

**All-Wheel Drive (AWD):**
AWD automatically sends power where traction is needed. It engages smoothly, often without driver input, making it ideal for daily driving in snow, rain, or varied terrain. It's lighter and more fuel-efficient than 4WD, so it's becoming the standard for many SUVs and sedans.

**Four-Wheel Drive (4WD):**
4WD is more robust, with a transfer case letting you shift between 2WD and 4WD modes. High and low ranges give extra traction for serious off-roading and extreme snow. It's heavier and uses more fuel, but offers unmatched capability for tough conditions.

**Choosing:
Most people in Northern Illinois benefit from AWD-it handles winter commutes beautifully. If you truly off-road or face deep snow regularly, 4WD is worth it.
